A good Diani Beach holiday comes down to a few early choices: when you go, how you get there, and where you stay. Get those right and the rest is easy. This guide walks you through seven steps, including one many visitors skip: choosing between busy Diani and quieter Msambweni, 25 km to the south.
Diani is warm all year, but the seasons change the sea, the wind and the crowds.
| Months (approx.) | What to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Late December to March | Hot, mostly dry, calmer sea. Peak season around Christmas and New Year. | Swimming, snorkelling, families, beginner kitesurfers |
| April to June | Long rains, heaviest around May. Humid, fewer visitors, lower rates. | Quiet breaks, green scenery, value |
| July to October | Drier and cooler with stronger winds. The sea can be rougher and seaweed may wash up. | Kitesurfing, pleasant daytime heat, Kenya safari combinations |
| November to early December | Short rains, usually brief showers. Quieter before the festive rush. | Good-value stays, birdwatching |
Rain on the coast often falls in short, heavy bursts rather than all day. Even in the wetter months, you can usually still get beach time.
Four nights gives you a taste: two beach days and one or two trips out. Seven nights is the sweet spot. It gives you time to rest, to fit in a full day at sea or on safari, and to have a spare day if the weather turns. If you are adding a safari in Tsavo or the Maasai Mara, put the beach at the end so you finish the trip rested.
You have three main options.
International visitors need an approved electronic travel authorisation (eTA) before flying to Kenya. Check the current rules on the official government portal before you book.
This is the decision that shapes your whole holiday.
Diani puts you close to restaurants, beach bars, shops and water sports centres. It is lively, especially in peak season. The trade-off is busier beaches and more vendors.
Msambweni is where the coast slows down. Beaches are quiet, nights are dark enough for stargazing, and you are closer to Shimoni, Wasini Island and Funzi. Diani is still within reach for a meal or a day trip.
YU Resort sits on the beach at Msambweni. Choose the Beach Villa Etherium suite for a private pool on the sand, or browse all our rooms, from the garden setting of the Upper Resort to the beachfront Beach Villa.
This is the tip most first-time visitors wish they had known. A coral reef runs along this coast, and the tide changes the beach a lot. At high tide, the lagoon fills and swimming is easy. At low tide, the water pulls back and you can walk out across the reef flats and rock pools.
Check the tide times each day. Plan swims and water sports around high tide, and save low tide for beach walks. Wear reef shoes on the flats and don’t step on coral.
Don’t try to do everything. Choose a few highlights and leave time to rest between them. Popular choices include:

The same planning rules apply to teams. Quiet surroundings help people focus, and the coast gives you easy ways to relax after work sessions. See our business retreats for team offsites on the South Coast.
