Diani is Kenya’s best-known beach, and for good reason. The sand is long and pale, a reef protects the lagoon, and there is plenty to do. You will find restaurants, beach bars, dive centres and kite schools within a short tuk-tuk ride. Ukunda Airstrip is right next door, so getting here from Nairobi is quick.

Msambweni sits about 25 km south of Diani. The beaches are just as beautiful, but far quieter. There are fewer hotels, fewer vendors and darker skies at night. It is also closer to Shimoni, Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, the South Coast’s best spot for dolphins and snorkelling.

Watamu, on the north coast, is built around nature. Watamu Marine National Park protects coral gardens close to shore, and nearby Mida Creek is a mangrove inlet known for its birdlife. It is a relaxed village with a strong conservation focus, including sea turtle protection work.
Malindi is one of the oldest towns on the coast, with Swahili, Arab, Portuguese and Italian influences. It has more of a town feel than a resort feel, with markets, restaurants and a long beach. It is a good pick if you want culture and food alongside the sea.
